Do you want to give the gift of light?
While d.light is committed to eradicating kerosene lanterns
by providing lights at affordable prices to customers without
access to electricity, some families living far below the
poverty line cannot afford even several cents per day for
improved lighting.
For only $30, you can provide a needy family with a solar light
through dlightdesign.org’s Give Light Program. The gift of a
bright, safe, solar light will allow a family to replace their
dim, dangerous and environmentally damaging kerosene wick
lanterns.
How does it work?
dlightdesign.org has partnered with One World Children's Fund to
collect philanthropic donations to provide free lighting for the
most needy families. '100% of funds received by One World
Children’s Fund go to project expenses
and no part of your donation is diverted for overhead. We will
provide all donors with an email that contains a picture and
description of the family that receives the light.
Can I give on behalf of someone else?
Yes. Your donation makes a wonderful gift and the recipient
receives a personalized email to alert him/her that a light was
provided to a needy family in his/her name. Just click on "Give
the Gift of Light" and follow the directions.
What does my gift do?
Safe and Healthy Living
Reduction of indoor
air pollution. Acute lower respiratory infections caused by
indoor air pollution is one of the biggest killers among
children under 5 in India.
Elimination of kerosene fires. Accidents involving kerosene
lanterns cause thousands of fires and burns each year.
Reduction in carbon footprint. Our solar lights replace 1 ton of
greenhouse gas (each year).
Increased Productivity
Higher Income
Potential. UNDP studies demonstrate that families with access to
improved lighting have up to a 30% increase in income levels due
to increased productivity at night.
Access to Education. Solar lights will offer brighter and higher
quality light for children to read and study by. Not only is
improved lighting better for their eyes, it also allows children
to study at night improving exam scores by 60%.
Tangible Savings
The average rural household in India spends 7.4% of their income on fuel and lighting, over three times more than is spent on education. Solar lights will enable these families to spend that money on other critical needs like healthcare and education.
