d.light design ( is a social enterprise dedicated to bringing modern lighting and power to underserved populations including 1.6 billion people currently without electricity globally. We are financed by venture capital firms including Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Garage Technology Ventures, Mahindra and Mahindra, and Nexus India Capital. We also have investment from leading social funds like Gray Matters Capital and Acumen Fund. Our vision is that in 10 years we will partner with other organizations to replace every kerosene lantern in the world with safer, brighter, and more affordable lighting.

d.light Recognitions

We are pleased to announce that AlwaysOn has selected d.light design as one of their Global 250 Winners for 2008. Inclusion in the AO Global 250 signifies major developments in the creation of new business opportunities in the global technology industries. d.light was recognized with the other honorees at the AlwaysOn & STVP Summit at Stanford University on July 22-24, 2008. You can see our press release regarding this award on our website.

d.light has also been nominated for two additional awards: The AlwaysOn GoingGreen 100 (which we won last year) and the Zayed Future Energy Prize. The latter is a global competition named in memory of the late ruler of Abu Dhabi and founding father of the United Arab Emirates, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In early 2009, the Zayed Future Energy Prize will recognize three individuals, companies, organizations, and NGOs that have made significant contributions in the global response to the future of energy.

As of mid-August, d.light is also being featured as an organization to support under the Social Action section of the Polo Ralph Lauren website. Check it out here!

Give Light Program Update

Thanks to your support and generosity, this month we surpassed 500 lights provided for families in need in rural India through our Give Light Program. Your donations have provided life-changing light for nearly 1,500 adults and 1,000 children of the Dalit (formerly known as the "untouchables") community in eleven different villages. Here are some photos of families receiving the light at a community event. These were sent to us by REDS, our NGO distribution partner

If you haven't already, please consider giving a donation to provide solar lighting for families who otherwise would not be able to afford it. A gift of $30 provides light for an entire family; a gift of $750 provides light for an entire village. Your donation is tax-deductible and you will receive an email with the name and photo of the family who receives your light. Donate now!

Thank You to our Summer Interns!

Many thanks to Federico Lozano, Jeremy Utley, and Joe Mellin, who spent the summer in our Delhi office and significantly contributed to the business development, strategic planning, and product design of d.light. Fede and Jeremy are returning to the Stanford Graduate School of Business to finish their second year; Joe will be completing his program at the Stanford Design School. We are grateful for their tremendous energy, creativity, and talent, and wish them the best in their continued studies!
