d.light design ( is a social enterprise dedicated to bringing modern lighting and power to underserved populations including 1.6 billion people currently without electricity globally. We are financed by venture capital firms including Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Garage Technology Ventures, Mahindra and Mahindra, and Nexus India Capital. We also have investment from leading social funds like Gray Matters Capital and Acumen Fund. Our vision is that in 10 years we will partner with other organizations to replace every kerosene lantern in the world with safer, brighter, and more affordable lighting.

d.light on the move!
It has been a very busy season for d.light, as you can guess from the absence of our regular monthly newsletters.  Much has been happening, but here are some of the key highlights:

  • As of mid-June, 2008, d.light has officially moved overseas!  Both offices in New Delhi, India and Shenzhen, China are up and running.  Our email addresses are the same, but you can find our new contact information on our website.

Manufacturing and Production Office in Shenzhen, China

  • June 16 was a big date for us: It was the official launch of our full product line and a newly designed website.  We now have three products (Nova, Vega, and Comet) that come as solar-charged or AC-charged lights at various price points for both rural and semi-urban customers.  Check out all the latest product info on the website at

  • In conjunction with the launch, d.light had a number of feature articles published in various media outlets and blogs.  Here are links to the ones we know of; if you see any that we missed, please pass them on to us!

    Thank you Erica!
As of the end of May, Erica Estrada, one of our founders, officially transitioned off of the d.light team. Erica played a key role in product design and managing need-finding for d.light, including taking many trips to rural Myanmar, India, Cambodia, and Thailand. Erica persevered through all types of weather conditions, illnesses, and other challenges to provide d.light with the best research and ideas to inform our product design.

Erica has returned to Stanford to serve as a fellow with the Design School while she prepares to apply for law school. We are grateful for all the work she did for d.light, and wish her great success in the future!
