D.light at the World Economic Forum Conference

As finalists in this year's Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year Competition, founders Ned Tozun and Sam Goldman were invited to participate in the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of New Champions in Dalian, China, on September 10-12. This annual WEF conference focuses particularly on emerging markets and new players in the global economy.

Ned Tozun was asked to present at a Social Entrepreneurship IdeasLab, at which business and government leaders from around the world heard about D.light's mission and work. The resulting energy and enthusiasm in the room was palpable--for D.light, but also for the other social enterprises that were featured, including organizations focused on land rights, migrant labor opportunities, and community development.

Though the concept of social entrepreneurship is still in its nascent stages in mainstream business circles, interest is clearly growing. Thanks to the Schwab Foundation for giving us this opportunity to share about D.light on the world stage!

D.light Featured in Time Magazine

In the September 21 issue of Time Magazine around the world, D.light was featured as one of 25 "Responsibility Pioneers" in a supplement to their cover article on Ethical Consumerism. If you didn't get a chance to see it in print, you can still read the article online and view D.light's profile.

The Solata is Now Available on Amazon

Thanks to the very positive response to the Nova S200 on Amazon, we've decided to add the Solata as well. It's available to be ordered and shipped anywhere in the continental US. Now anyone in the US can now purchase either product online here.

D.light China Moves to New Office

You all know that D.light has been growing at an exponential rate. So for the second time in less than a year, D.light's China office has had to move to a new, larger office. Still in the heart of Shenzhen, the China office is nearly double the size of the previous office and allows for more meeting spaces and an exclusive testing room. Special thanks to the China admin staff for helping us make this move happen! Please see the contact page on our website for our new address.

Field Report: Providing Lights in Rural China

As a mostly electrified country, China has not been one of our target markets. However, there are still areas within Western China that are very rural and do not have grid electricity. These homes use rudimentary wick lamps or hearth fires for light. Beginning in early September, D.light partnered with the Jet Li One Foundation for a pilot project in three villages in Sichuan Province. The area is home to one of the largest populations of the Yi ethnic group, as well as many other minority ethnic groups.

150 families will receive a Nova S200 for the three-month pilot. As D.light's first foray into the Chinese market, this has been particularly exciting for the staff in our China office, who now get to see the products they have manufactured benefitting their fellow citizens.
